As you may know, the WordPress Media Library<\/a> holds all of your images, videos, documents, and audio clips. As such, it\u2019s an important element of your website. Unfortunately, there are times when the Media Library needs a little help to function as it should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may be here because you can\u2019t upload images to your WordPress site. The most common reasons your Media Library has stopped working properly are incompatible plugins and\/or themes, WordPress HTTP error, and improperly set file permissions. Fortunately, any image upload issue can likely be resolved simply and quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if you’re having issues uploading images to your WordPress website, keep reading. In this WordPress tutorial, we\u2019ll introduce the various issues you may experience when using the WordPress Media Library. We\u2019ll then show you how to solve your WordPress image upload error so you can get back to running your website. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Media Library Not Loading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As stated, the most common reason your Media Library isn\u2019t loading is due to an incompatible or poorly coded WordPress theme or plugin. When using plugins<\/a> and themes from the WordPress Directory, this typically shouldn\u2019t be a problem. However, third-party software or accidental coding issues can cause your Media Library to malfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, we recommend you test out your plugins. From the WordPress Dashboard, navigate to Plugins<\/em> > Installed Plugins<\/em> within WordPress. Select the top checkbox next to Plugin (to select all plugins) and choose Deactivate from the Bulk Actions<\/em> drop-down menu. Click Apply<\/em>, then return to your Media Library:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it loads, one of your plugins is the issue. Unfortunately, there\u2019s no easy way to tell which one. You\u2019ll have to reactivate each plugin individually and check your Media Library each time. Once the library stops loading again, the plugin you\u2019ve just activated is the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If plugins aren\u2019t the problem, your theme may be. To test this out, go to Appearance<\/em> > Themes<\/em>. Activate a different theme than the one you have currently set (don\u2019t worry, your current theme\u2019s settings will be saved). If the Media Library now works, the theme was the issue. If not, it may be a deeper problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, you\u2019ll want to speak with the developer in the first instance to fix the image upload issue. If the plugin or theme is vital to your workflow, you may need to seek out an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also good to speak with your host. With providers such as WP Engine<\/a>, knowledgeable staff can look at your installation more closely and root out any problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Media Library Not Showing Images<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your Media Library is loading but not showing images, there are two primary causes: an incompatible plugin, and improper file permissions. Testing plugins follows the same advice as above, and if they\u2019re not the cause, file permissions may be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reconfigure them, you\u2019ll need access to a File Protocol Transfer (FTP) manager such as FileZilla<\/a>, and potentially brush up on your skills<\/a> if you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019re set, navigate to wp-content<\/em> within the server screen of FileZilla, and right click on \/uploads<\/em>\/. Select File permissions<\/em> and set the Numeric value<\/em> to 744:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, this provides Read<\/em> access for everyone, but Write<\/em> and Execute<\/em> access for the owner (i.e. you). You\u2019ll also need to check the box next to Recurse into subdirectories<\/em>, and select the radio button next to Apply to directories only<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click OK<\/em>, then return to the \/uploads<\/em>\/ folder. Right click, and once again select File permissions<\/em>. However, this time set Numeric value<\/em> to 644, select the box next to Recurse into subdirectories<\/em>, and select Apply to files only<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference here is that nobody gets Execute<\/em> access for files. Essentially resetting the file permission to default should sort the issue of your WordPress Media Library not showing images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Media Library Grid View Not Working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When adding a previously uploaded image to your pages or posts, you\u2019ll be working with what\u2019s known as Grid View<\/em>. It\u2019s a way for you to view your media in a quick-view format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the Grid View<\/em> isn\u2019t working, adding images to your site could become tedious. However, you can likely fix the issue in one of two ways. Fortunately, we\u2019ve already gone through the exact steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quite often, an incompatible plugin or incorrect file permissions are the primary causes here. You can try the steps outlined above, but if these don\u2019t work, it\u2019s best to contact the developer of any incompatible plugin, or your hosting<\/a> provider for further troubleshooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Media Library Search Not Working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A packed Media Library means it\u2019s important to have a quick and easy search option. If you\u2019re having trouble finding files with the Media Library\u2019s built-in search, there are a few reasons to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, there could be a simple caching issue, which can be solved by clearing your cookies and cache. Alternatively, it could be caused by an incompatible plugin\u2014the steps for which we\u2019ve already outlined. Whatever the cause, there are alternatives that provide advanced ways to organize and search your media content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One option is Media Library Assistant<\/a>, a plugin that upgrades the current WordPress Media Library setup:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using this plugin, you can categorize your current and future media. You can also Bulk Edit media files or use the plugin to search your files, bypassing the WordPress Media Library altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Media Library Thumbnails Not Showing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thumbnails\u2014i.e. reduced-size versions of media\u2014can provide you with an at-a-glance look at your library\u2019s content. Though, there are a few reasons your thumbnails may not display, much in the same way as the images themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you outlined within a few previous sections, the cause is usually plugins-related, or improperly set WordPress file permissions. You\u2019ll find that these solutions are your go-to options for troubleshooting any display issues you have with the Media Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Media Library Organization & Clean Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even if you aren\u2019t currently having trouble with your setup, excessive files can make it difficult to organize and find the media you need. As such, regular organization and clean up of your Media Library is beneficial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To organize your current media, you can use a plugin. Media Library Assistant<\/a>, as mentioned above, is a good option. However, other choices are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Media Library Folders<\/a> makes it easy to create actual folders within your WordPress Media Library. The drag-and-drop interface makes it simple to copy and move files, and you can also rename or delete them as you see fit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By keeping your image file or media file to a minimum when you upload an image or video, you reduce server load.
